Ruth and John celebrated their wedding at Bellingham Castle in Castlebellingham, Co. Louth – a fairytale castle with crenellated towers, ivy-covered walls and beautiful courtyard gardens, about an hour from both Dublin and Belfast.

Getting ready in the castle
The morning began inside the castle’s characterful rooms, with exposed stone walls and iron bedsteads. Ruth’s embroidered bridal shoes with organza ribbons waited on an old wooden table, and her reflection in an antique mirror made one of my favourite frames of the day.
A first look in the gardens
Before the ceremony Ruth and John shared a quiet first look in the castle gardens – a few emotional, laughter-filled minutes just for the two of them, away from everyone else.
An outdoor ceremony at Bellingham Castle
Ruth and John were married outdoors in the castle courtyard, with white chairs lined up beside the old stone walls and the castle towers as a backdrop. A little flower girl scattered petals down the aisle before Ruth walked in with her parents, beaming from ear to ear.
Their families watched every moment from the front row. The vows were full of smiles, the first kiss earned a huge round of applause – and Ruth threw her bouquet into the air as they walked back down the aisle as husband and wife.
A pint in the bath
Later, we sneaked away for portraits inside the castle – including one of my favourite moments of the day: Ruth and John toasting with a pint of Guinness, sitting in a clawfoot bath by a tall window. Fun, relaxed and completely them.
Planning a Bellingham Castle wedding? A few tips
Consider the courtyard for your ceremony. The stone walls, pergola and castle towers make a stunning outdoor setting – and they look incredible on film.
Use the castle interiors. Exposed stone, antique mirrors and big sash windows give you beautiful options whatever the weather.
Make room for fun. The most memorable portraits are often the unplanned ones – like a pint in the bath.
