Glasson Lakehouse Wedding: Shona and Alan’s Summer Wedding by Lough Ree
Glasson Lakehouse wedding film – Shona & Alan, Athlone, Co. Westmeath
A summer wedding at Glasson Lakehouse, Athlone
Shona and Alan were married at Glasson Lakehouse, just outside Athlone in Co. Westmeath, on Friday 1 August. With an outdoor ceremony on the lawns in front of the house, a bridal party in blush pink and portraits among the reeds on the shores of Lough Ree, it was a relaxed, joyful summer wedding in the heart of Ireland.
As their wedding videographer, I spent the day with them at the lakehouse. Here is a look at their Glasson Lakehouse wedding – and a few ideas if you are planning your own.
About Glasson Lakehouse
Glasson Lakehouse sits on the shores of Lough Ree, one of the great lakes on the River Shannon, near the village of Glasson. It began as the Reid family's period home, which became the Glasson Hotel & Golf Club, built around its own golf course, and in 2019 it was acquired by the Press Up group and reopened as Glasson Lakehouse. Today the house, its lawns and the golf course roll down towards the lake, with views across the water and its islands.
Getting ready
The details were hung on an old wooden board: the order of service with Shona and Alan's names, a pearl-covered bag, block-heeled sandals and a big satin bow. Alan, in a grey textured tuxedo jacket with black satin lapels and a black bow tie, took a quiet moment by the window before the ceremony.
An outdoor ceremony on the lawn
The ceremony took place outdoors on the lawn below the house, with a white aisle runner, wooden benches and cross-back chairs, and arrangements of white and blush flowers lining the way. Shona walked down the aisle with her dad, wearing a lace V-neck gown with beaded cap sleeves and a long veil, and carrying a bouquet of blush roses. The bridal party – bridesmaids and a bridesman, all in blush pink with bouquets of gypsophila – waved, laughed and wiped away a few tears, and when Shona and Alan shared their first kiss as a married couple, the whole lawn broke into applause.
Portraits by Lough Ree
After the ceremony we headed down towards the water, where the reeds of Lough Ree meet the shore, and across the open fairways of the golf course. The bridal party raised their bouquets in the air by the lake, the youngest guest – a little flower girl with a crown of gypsophila – took a moment to herself on the lawn, and then everyone headed back to the lakehouse to celebrate into the night.
Planning a wedding at Glasson Lakehouse? A few tips
Take the ceremony outside. The lawns at Glasson Lakehouse make a beautiful outdoor ceremony space in summer – just have the indoor option ready in case the Irish weather changes its mind.
Head to the water for portraits. The reeds and the shoreline of Lough Ree are only a short walk away and give you a completely different look from the house and the golf course.
Think about the drone. From the air, the house, the golf course and the islands of Lough Ree look spectacular – it is one of the best venues in Ireland for aerial shots.
Match your bridal party. Shona's blush pink dresses, matching suit and gypsophila bouquets looked wonderful against the green lawns – and on film.
